Roofers can work in light rain on lead, tile replacement and EPDM, but GRP fibreglass, mortar repointing and full re-roofs need dry conditions. We schedule weather-sensitive work into dry windows and attend emergencies in any weather. Free quote: 0172 223 9611.
One of the most practical questions when roofing work is scheduled is: what happens if it rains? The answer depends entirely on the type of work being done.
What Can Proceed in the Rain
- Lead work: Lead forming, dressing and fixing is unaffected by rain — the work does not require dry conditions
- Tile replacement: Individual tile replacement can proceed in light rain — the roof is open for minimal periods and the finished work is immediately waterproof
- EPDM rubber flat roofing: EPDM bonding proceeds in damp conditions more tolerantly than GRP
- Fascia and guttering: UPVC replacement is unaffected by rain
GRP fibreglass manufacturers specify application only above 5°C on a dry substrate — the technical reason wet-weather GRP work is deferred while lead and tile work can proceed.

What Must Wait for Dry Conditions
- GRP fibreglass: Requires dry surface and temperatures above 5°C for laminate and gelcoat to cure correctly
- Mortar bedding and repointing: Ridge and hip repointing cannot be done in rain or if frost is forecast within the 24-48 hour curing window
- Full re-roofs (large sections): We do not strip significant roof sections if heavy rain is forecast — exposed felt sustains damage from sustained downpour
How We Schedule Around Wiltshire Weather
We monitor Met Office forecasts closely and schedule weather-sensitive work into forecast dry windows. We call to confirm start dates within 24 hours of the planned start. If conditions are marginal, we would rather delay by a day than do the job in unsuitable conditions.
Winter Scheduling in Wiltshire
November through February is the most weather-constrained period. Mortar work is largely paused during hard frost periods. GRP installation requires careful forecast monitoring. Lead work, tile replacement and emergency repairs proceed throughout winter regardless of conditions. We are realistic about scheduling at the quote stage and do not over-promise winter completion on weather-sensitive work.
