An emergency roof tarpaulin is heavy-duty sheeting secured over storm-damaged roofing to stop water ingress until permanent repair. Correctly fixed at ridge and eaves, it lasts several weeks. We install emergency protection across Salisbury 24/7. Costs £150–£400. Call 0172 223 9611.
An emergency roof tarpaulin is the most common immediate response to significant roof damage — a heavy-duty waterproof cover installed over a damaged section to prevent further ingress while conditions allow proper permanent repair.
When a Tarpaulin Is Needed
We install emergency tarpaulins when: a large area of tiles has been displaced in a storm; a roof section has been structurally damaged; the felt underlay is exposed and active rain is forecast; or when permanent repair requires materials or conditions not immediately available. The key decision is whether waiting overnight could cause further secondary damage to the interior.
The Association of British Insurers advises that reasonable emergency protection costs are recoverable under a valid claim, provided damage is photographed first and the insurer notified before permanent repair.

How We Install Emergency Protection
A correctly installed tarpaulin is secured at the ridge and weighted or tied at the eaves. An unsecured tarpaulin in Wiltshire wind is worse than no tarpaulin — it acts as a sail and causes additional damage. We carry 250gsm heavy-duty polyethylene sheet, cut to size on site and secured properly. This provides weathertight protection through normal wind and rain conditions until permanent repair is possible.
How Long Tarpaulin Protection Lasts
A correctly installed tarpaulin remains effective for several weeks. We always aim to complete permanent repair within 2-4 weeks and confirm this timeline when we install the protection.
Tarpaulin vs Other Emergency Measures
Depending on the damage type, alternatives or additions to tarpaulin include: ridge tile re-seating with temporary mortar, individual tile replacement from van stock, lead flashing emergency re-securing, and gutter clearance if overflow is contributing to ingress. We assess on arrival and do whatever is needed to make the property safe.
Insurance and Tarpaulin
Emergency make-safe costs are almost always recoverable when the underlying damage is a valid insurance claim. Always photograph damage before any tarpaulin is installed and notify your insurer before permanent repairs begin. We provide written documentation for insurance submissions.
